Kitchen Tip- Cutting a Pound of Butter
My favourite part of grocery shopping in the US (apart from the fact that you can buy alcohol at the Grocery Store- Oh how Canadians’ suffer) is the butter. American butter is sold standard in four 1/4 pound sticks per package. This makes baking and cooking significantly easier. Canadian butter is usually sold like this:
One giant brick! No tablespoon markings! Not already divided into 1/2 cup measurements! Sure you can purchase already divided butter in Canada, but for some reason it costs $1 more per pound.
For those Canadians like me that are too cheap to purchase already divided butter, here is the trick I use. As soon as I get home from the store I divide my butter into quarters lengthwise, as shown below:
Each 1/4 of butter segment equals 1/2 a cup and contains 8 Tbsp. Each segment can later be subsequently divided if tablespoons (or a 1/4 cup) are required for a recipe.
